Birds, real paradise

Ethiopia is truly a birdwatcher’s paradise. With more than 865 recorded species, our country offers one of the richest birding experiences in Africa.

From the scorching lowlands of the Danakil Depression to the towering peaks of Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s diverse landscapes provide habitats for an incredible variety of birds.

We are proud to host 16 species found nowhere else in the world, along with 15 more shared only with Eritrea. This unique mix of endemics, near-endemics, and migratory visitors makes Ethiopia a dream destination for bird lovers, where every region reveals new wonders and unforgettable sightings.

Flyway crossroads : Ethiopia lies along the East African flyway, a major route for birds traveling between Eurasia and Africa.

Unique Birds of Ethiopia

  • Blue-winged Goose: Found only in Ethiopian highland marshes, often seen in large flocks after rains.
  • Ethiopian Bush-crow: Restricted to the dry savannas of southern Ethiopia, known for its intelligence and social behaviour.
  • Prince Ruspoli’s Turaco: A striking bird with emerald plumage, discovered in the 19th century and still confined to small forest patches.
  • Spot-breasted Lapwing: An elegant highland bird, often seen in Afro-alpine grasslands above 3,000 meters.
  • Abyssinian Catbird: Famous for its melodious song, found in juniper forests of the Ethiopian highlands.

Why Ethiopia is a Birder’s Paradise

  • Over 865 species recorded, including 16 strict endemics and 15 near-endemics shared with Eritrea.
  • Diverse habitats ranging from Afro-alpine peaks to desert lowlands.
  • Seasonal spectacles when migratory flocks join resident endemics, creating unforgettable birdwatching experiences.

Ethiopia is a true paradise for birdwatchers, boasting a rich and diverse birdlife
